Journal #26

October 1, 2020 by Deanna Repose Oaks

I went to a kid’s birthday party yesterday. In the middle of everything, kids screaming, parents helping pass out food, and everyone trying to find a seat, my writer’s brain took over. Before long, I sat in a great place to hide, dug the only blank scrap of paper out of my purse (an envelope), stole a pen from the gift table, and started scribbling away. The other parents were staring at me each time I looked up from the envelope. I didn’t care because guess what? I was writing. I now have a new scene for my novel. Yet, looking back, I have a feeling there are a whole bunch of parents who think I am crazy. I don’t think any of them know that I am a writer.

I think I need a journal that is small enough to fit in my purse for moments such as these. They are becoming more and more frequent with the increased focus I am putting on my novels. But, where to find one that is both small enough to fit in my purse yet not too small to write in? It took me over a month to figure out my planning book, and that was a normal-sized book recommended by a friend. I can’t waste too much time on this, so maybe I’ll just keep a bunch of blank envelopes in my purse. Heaven knows we get enough junk mail to keep without breaking the bank.

Oh the dilemmas of keeping up with my brain.
