valuing people

Prompt 6

February 6, 2020 by Deanna Repose Oaks

What is considered “worth it”, really? When I think about “worth it” things it is mostly about the value PEOPLE add to my life and the quantification of such is unfathomable. How do you quantify the value of a PERSON? Or even the joy that person adds to your life?

I don’t understand how lawyers put a monetary value on a life when they are trying wrongful death suits. They must value a person’s life with a cash value in order to bring a suit to court. I’ve always wondered how they do that. Do they count friends? Community impact? Loved ones? Salary? Future earnings? All of the above? What if they have life insurance policies? Does the cash value change? Like maybe Mike was worth $1.5 million but he had an insurance policy that paid out $750,000, will his worth drop to $750,000 in the eyes of the court?

Does the defense get to diminish Mike’s value? Like: Mike walked out of the store with an extra candy bar in 1954 by accident, so he isn’t the upstanding person everyone thinks he is, so now he needs to be less than what he was prior to 1954…
