It is funny when you are down to the wire
All the pent-up frustration and fire
Burned out, long gone, and dead
Leaving in its place total and utter dread
The finish line is now within sight
Cheering has started on the left and right
The pavement, once smooth is now a hazard
Running upon it a complete disaster
Nothing like the race started out to be
A winnable race, certainly
Finishing first can’t be done
The race was already won
But finishing for finishing’s sake
(You don’t want to regret that mistake)
Double over, cramping, gasping for air
Wishing it was over, the whole affair
Down to 7 now, almost done
Crossing the line, it is now won
