Prompt 25

March 3, 2020 by Deanna Repose Oaks

I am supposed to walk out on stage tomorrow night, after I walk down the red carpet. I am so nervous. I have trouble walking these days. The replacement hips act up if I walk too far, and I feel like I walked 5 miles during the rehearsals yesterday, which didn’t include walking the red carpet. But, I am determined to walk. I didn’t walk for my college diploma or my high school or any of that. I need to show my kids that even without all that paper, you can still make something of yourself.

My dress is designed by someone whose name I can’t pronounce, and I’ll be walking slowly down the red carpet. I’ve decided that if they ask me about the dress, I’ll ask them if they know the reason I am wearing it. If they tell me it is because I am at the Academy Awards to receive a lifetime achievement award, I’m going to scoff at them. The dress is black, my favorite color, with a teal butterfly across the back. The reason I am wearing it is because all angels have wings, and this dress has wings! No one will guess that answer.

Prompt 4

Dear Diary,

Another great day on the beach! I can’t believe that we are here in the middle of winter under what feels like a summer sun. I can’t believe that this little house is ours. We dreamed of this for years and years… and we enjoy it every random time we can. This week we snuck away from the ‘real’ world just because we could. Oh, and the beach! Did I mention the beach?

Hubby is out fishing with the cruise ship people again. He loves taking the boat out and is so happy to be helping the local economy in more ways than just paying taxes. I love to see his smile when he gets off the boat. Plus, the deckhands are such awesomely great cooks. What they can do with one conch and lemon! I must remember to thank them again for the meal day before yesterday…

I met hubby at the dock yesterday and we wandered up the beach walking through the waves as the sun set. It is a day one of them I won’t soon forget.
I think I’ll remember it forever because it feels like the best day of our lives, so far, because as the saying goes: “You haven’t lived your whole life yet.”

Best Laid Plans

November 14, 2019 by Deanna Repose Oaks

Best laid plans of mice and men
Best laid plans of mice and men
Echos through my dreams as I wake
The sound of cracking bones fading from my ears
As the next breath escapes, the dream is buried deep
So deep the rotting carcass won’t smell
And remind me of the beating heart
That once was; that will never be
Best laid plans of mice and men
“Of Mice and Men”
Steinbeck’s title reverberates through my memory
Bringing me forward to what could be
From what used to be
A poem
A poem, written by Robert Burns, 1785
If only
