My home town is called “Hoto.” The founders were big fans of the movie “Titanic” and named it Hoto after “Heart of the Ocean.” (Well, that’s how one of the legends tells it…) Hoto is a community nestled between the mountains and the sea. When photos of the Heart of the Ocean necklace are overlaid upon the maps of Hoto, the white diamonds encircling the blue diamond of the necklace trace along the mountain ridges and the islands just off the coast.
Locals have always called it “The Hot O”; tourists call it just plain “Hoto.” (The OTHER legend says that one of the founder’s names was Oscar and he was good looking. One of the married women on the council commented that it looked like Oscar named the town for himself, another asked how, and the first replied with “Hot O, get it?” Poor Oscar died with that name on his tombstone.)
Residents here live to love others. There was once a lemonade stand to save a park, and someone bought a cup of lemonade for $10,000 even though the kids selling it were asking for $1.
The weather here is dependably comfortable with enough variations to be a bit unpredictable.
